Presentation

 

The School of Maritime Technology of Peniche, a part of Polytechnic Institute of Leiria,  was established in 1999/2000 having the sea as its trademark and the basis of its identity. Located in Peniche, the educational offer is totally adjusted to the Bologna Process: Biotechnology and Maritime Biology, Food and Biological Engineering, Tourism and Hotel Management, Tourism, Marketing for Tourism, Catering and Civil Protection. The new degree in Catering is meant to reinforce the School educational offer in the Tourism and Hotel area.

 

At the moment the School functions in temporary facilities provided by the Municipality of Peniche. The future facilities are in the final construction phase, located near Cabo Carvoeiro in Peniche.

Within the scientific and pedagogic infrastructures, the three IT, the Biology, the Chemistry, the Physics Laboratories, the Library, the study room and several offices are worth mentioning.

 

The School includes a technology center, the West Biotechnology Laboratory (LBO), which supports the local institutions and companies in the areas of quality control and food safety, promoting the development of research projects in accordance with the regional business needs, namely through the implementation of quality management systems. At the moment an aquaculture laboratory is being set up.

 

During the 2006/2007 school year, 920 students are expected from all areas of the country and abroad.

 

 

Teaching Staff

The School teaching staff is comprised of 14 PhD, 28 MsC and 36 “licenciados” (5 year University degree).

 

 

Objectives

The School is a public higher education institution integrated in the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria working in the areas of teaching, professional training, research and community services, ruled by quality standards which guarantee an adequate response to the region needs.

The School objectives cover the areas of tourism, management, biology, biotechnology, civil protection and engineering, trying to achieve: initial and continuous training of high level professionals in the cultural, scientific and technical fields; research and development activities; professional update and retraining projects; cultural exchange with similar institutions, etc.

Currently the School has seven courses completely adjusted to the Bologna Process:

   - Tourism
